💌 When their tone shifts or the conversation stops, does your body freeze first?
When their tone changes, does your body tense, or does "did I do something wrong?" come first? Childhood experience isn't the only possible cause. Pressure in the current relationship, repeated conflict, anxiety, sleep, and health can all play a part.
This tool is not a test that finds causes. It walks through the moments you shrank back without noticing, in 24 questions, and gathers help you can use today.
Answer with one relationship or situation that has come up often in the last 3 months. If one is hard to pick, think of reactions that repeated across relationships. For an ended relationship, use its last 3 months.
The way you coped then doesn't get judged by today's standards. Look separately at the emotional support you desperately needed then, and the practical protection the adult you can give yourself now.

This tool draws on the CDC's explanation of adverse childhood experiences (ACEs), opens in a new window, a paper on the link between childhood maltreatment and emotion regulation — this study, opens in a new window — and SAMHSA's principles of a trauma-informed approach, opens in a new window, which centers safety and choice. The 24 questions and result criteria were created by Re:Alive. The cited materials have not validated this tool, and the results alone can't judge childhood events or the cause of your reactions now.

This result is a record of reactions showing up lately. It is not evidence about childhood events, the cause of the reactions, or anyone's character.
Back then, shrinking back may have been your best available defense. Calmly consider whether it still protects you now that you're an adult — or wears you down — and whether a different way is now yours to choose.
This result alone can't tell you whether the relationship is safe. If there has been hitting or choking, confinement, sexual coercion, stalking, phone checks or location tracking, money being cut off or controlled, or threats of self-harm or harm to others, check the crisis support contacts regardless of any result. If pressure was put on your neck, symptoms can appear later even without visible marks — get checked at an emergency room.
When the shrinking-back moments feel a little fewer, you're welcome to come back and take this again.
