Narcissist Behavior Q&A

🐾 They threaten to abandon or hurt my pet

Holding a pet hostage to frighten you is a serious threat too. Don't rush over alone to get them back — build a plan that protects you first.

The short answer

Demanding a meeting or your silence by threatening to hurt your pet is control.

Scenes like this

  • They said the dog goes out on the street if you leave.
  • They hid the cat and made returning her conditional on seeing you.

How to tell the difference

People can disagree over how to care for an animal. Frightening you with threats to hurt the animal, to block your choices, is not that.

When this happens, try this

  • Copy the documents that prove ownership — registration, vet bills — and line up a friend or a temporary foster first.
  • If they're threatening to hurt the pet right now, don't go into the home alone — call 911 or ask your local animal control for help.
