Narcissist Behavior Q&A
⚖️ Is disagreeing with me gaslighting too?
Not every difference of opinion is gaslighting. Watch for whether they distort even plain facts in front of you until you doubt your memory and judgment.
| Disagreement | Behavior close to gaslighting |
|---|---|
| Each side states a different view | Verified facts get erased |
| Explanations update with new information | "You're too sensitive" shakes my memory |
The short answer
Memories can differ. Denying the records themselves while painting you as "the crazy one" is a different matter.
Scenes like this
- You each felt the same event differently, but traded explanations.
- Or: shown the records, they dismissed your every judgment — you'd "lost it."
How to tell the difference
People who disagree can still admit either might be wrong. Watch whether they insist only their account is true and attack the person asking.
When this happens, try this
You don't need to cling to psychology terms. Look only for whether the same facts keep getting distorted, and whether your words get dismissed until your judgment shakes. If verbal abuse or physical threats are in the mix, tend to your safety before the conversation.
